No
CGI experts developed a machine learning solution for the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency to identify invasive species along roadsides and prevent biodiversity loss.
Problem
The Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency has hundreds of millions of photos of the Finnish route network and many different data sources, such as weather cameras and contractors who continuously add images to the archive. Invasive species pose one of the greatest threats to biodiversity by modifying or disrupting original ecosystems, causing environmental and economic damage.
Solution
CGI experts developed a machine learning solution for the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency to identify invasive species along roadsides and prevent biodiversity loss. The analysed images are anonymised in the solution so that they do not constitute a personal data file under the GDPR.
Outcome
By linking automatic photo identification with a data registry on planting locations, it is possible to map previously undetected growths of invasive species and monitor their spread.
